MANGALORE: The South Canara Beedi Workers' Federation has written to the Union Labour Ministry to release Rs. 13 crores to the State Government towards scholarships for children of beedi workers, according to the secretary of the federation, Sukumar. Last year the office of the Welfare Commissioner, Bangalore, received 1,30,039 eligible applications. It required Rs. 13 crores to provide scholarships to those students. However, the Centre released only Rs. 6.50 crores to the State towards scholarships. Only 64,248 such children were sanctioned scholarships and the applications of another 65,000 students had to be turned down owing to lack of funds. More than 70,000 students the two districts had applied for scholarships last year, he said.
