Rain in Mumbai, no show in Chennai

Rock show, widely anticipated play, hit in city

CHENNAI: Five days after Mumbai went underwater, the impact was felt in Chennai. Weekend stage shows here were hit after artistes failed to arrive due to cancellation of flights.

Artistes Tejaswini Kolhapure, Kashmera Shah and the rest of the crew of Vandana Sajnani's `Beauty, Brains and Personality,' were stranded at the Mumbai airport till 1 p.m. on Sunday. The organisers called off the evening show and postponed it to August 26.

"We started refunding the money immediately," says Nalini Radhakrishnan of Media Mix, the event manager.

SMSes were sent to most ticket-holders. "We gave them a choice to retain their tickets for the show next month or to get it refunded," Ms. Nalini adds.

"The cast was expected to land on Saturday evening. They waited till this afternoon before they realised they would not be able to make it. Even the sets for the show had arrived at the hall," she explains.

"Music Academy was kind enough to let us postpone the show without charging us any money. So only the ads we released in the papers and the four hoardings we took in the city went waste. The best part was that we had no sponsors to answer to," says the organiser.

Another musical event at the same venue on Saturday was affected when only two out of the five artistes expected showed up. Mumbai-based musicians did not have flights to attend the programme.

The second JRO rock concert of the season started with one band less.

The band members of Metakix waited at the airport till six in the hope that their flight would take off.

When the organisers realised that the band would not be able to show up, they increased the playing time for the other two bands.

"We had `Joint Family' from Delhi and Chennai-based `Powder in the Ashtray' to compensate. We increased the playtime by 20 minutes for both these bands," says Lijin of Unwind Centre, boasting of a successful show.

"Next week, we have another band called `Bhayanak Maut' coming from Mumbai," he says . "We are keeping our fingers crossed because we heard it is still raining there."
