Stamp on Dheeran Chinnamalai released

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Commemorative stamps on Carnatic music exponent M.S.Subbulakhsmi, Tamil scholar Kavimani Desiya Vinayakam Pillai, film actor Gemini Ganesan and Congress leader Subburaman would be brought out this year, said the Union Minister for Information Technology and Communications, Dayanidhi Maran, on Sunday.

He was speaking after releasing a commemorative stamp on freedom fighter Dheeran Chinnamalai, at a function held at Anna Arivalayam.

He said ever since people gave the Democratic Progressive Alliance a massive mandate, it had been working tirelessly for them.

Mr. Maran handed over the first set of stamps to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi who recalled the contributions of Dheeran Chinnamalai to the freedom struggle.

He recalled that it was exactly 200 years ago, on July 31, 1805, that Dheeran Chinnamalai was hanged.

Daring acts recalled

Narrating his daring acts, Mr.Karunanidhi said Dheeran Chinnamalai had defeated an entire British army unit single-handedly. He never accepted the British rule and fought it with all his might.

Call for change in perception

E.V.K.S.Elangovan said sacrifices of freedom fighters from Tamil Nadu had to be highlighted since there was a general feeling in the North that people from the South had not contributed enough to the freedom struggle.

This perception had to be changed.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Shipping T.R. Baalu said efforts should be taken to create awareness among people on the exploits of freedom fighters from the State. Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan detailed the efforts taken to get the commemorative stamp released.
