CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat
NEW DELHI: CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat said on Sunday that the Polit Bureau of the party emphasised the importance of maintaining the country's independence in the development of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. He was briefing the press on the two-day deliberations of the Polit Bureau. "The Department of Atomic Energy should not be weakened while implementing the nuclear cooperation agreement on the basis of structured reciprocity," the Polit Bureau said. On the political front, the Polit Bureau said the developments in the Bharatiya Janata Party showed it was unable to reconcile to its role as a normal political party while having to act at the behest of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). "The recent effort to avert a confrontation on the issue over the leadership of the party cannot hide the fact that the BJP is merely a front of the RSS. The ideological confusion cannot hide the fact that the BJP is merely a front of the RSS. The efforts of the BJP to recover ground by picking up issues based on the Hindutva platform is not meeting with any meaningful response from the people," the Polit Bureau said. Mr. Karat said the allies of the BJP in the National Democratic Alliance had no grounds to deny that they were part of a combination whose majority party obeyed RSS dictates. Referring to Bihar, the party decided to discuss the issue of seat adjustments with the Rashtriya Janata Dal while striving to see that there was wider understanding. "The party will conduct an independent campaign to project how the problems of the State can be tackled," it said.
