Crackdown on illicit brewing
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI:
The city police cracked down on illicit arrack brewing units in two hamlets near Ennore on Sunday morning.
A team led by Joint Commissioner of Police (North) C. Sylendra Babu destroyed 5,000 litres of fermented wash waiting to be converted to arrack. Two persons, Murugan and Natarajan, were arrested under the provisions of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act (1937). They have been remanded to judicial custody.
"We decided to wipe out illicit brewing from Vichur and Villivoyal after we cleaned up pockets in Madhavarm and Chembrambakkam," said Mr. Babu.
The hamlets, the police official said, have been supplying arrack to Chennai even after they came under the city police's jurisdiction.
"The village elders have constituted vigilance groups to keep a check after we had a meeting with them," added the joint commissioner.
