Fernandes wants full report of Phukan Commission tabled

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: National Democratic Alliance convenor and Janata Dal (United) president George Fernandes will seek the tabling of the "entire 700-page'' Justice Phukan Commission report on the alleged Tehelka scam in Parliament on Monday. The issue will also be discussed in the NDA meeting on Monday morning, Mr. Fernandes told mediapersons here on Saturday.

In similar letters to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, Mr. Fernandes wrote that the list of business for Lok Sabha on July 27 said Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee would table a copy of the part-report and the accompanying note on the Phukan Commission's part report (in Hindi version only).

"However, what was placed was only a 47-page synopsis without at any point disclosing the existence of the 700-page report as has been submitted by Justice Phukan. This is obviously a concerted plan to deprive the nation of its right to information,'' he said in the letters.

Mr. Fernandes wrote that in a press statement on October 11, 2004, when the Commission was "prematurely wound up'', Justice Phukan had stated that "within two months thereafter i.e. on February 4, 2004, the Commission submitted its final report consisting of 700 pages, giving its conclusions in respect of each past defence and other deals and interim recommendations. It is made clear that it was not an interim report.''

Seeking the Speaker's intervention, Mr. Fernandes requested him to direct the Government to place the entire report in Parliament. He said this time he would seek a full reply from the Prime Minister to his letter than mere acknowledgement.
