VIJAYAWADA: The district administration plans to set up special committees to identify problems in the city and suggest solutions for them. The eight proposed committees would be headed by top bureaucrats who would meet periodically to discuss and find solutions to the issues.

The Krishna district Collector, Navin Mittal, will head the committees that would look into the issues of water supply and infrastructure and investment, the city Commissioner of Police, Umesh Sharraf, will lead the panel on road traffic and transportation. The Commissioner of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), Natarajan Guljar, will head the committees related to sanitation, beautification and municipal finances, the Joint Collector, P. Sampath Kumar, will be the head of the committee on urban community development. The Sub-Collector, Buddha Prakash Jyothi, will lead the committee on health while the vice-chairman of the Vijayawada, Guntur, Tenali, Mangalagiri Urban Development Authority (VGTM-UDA), V. Durga Das, will head the urban planning committee.

"The committees will work as taskforces in their respective areas. Officials of the departments concerned will be the members of the committees which are expected to prepare a list of problems on the priority order. If solution of a problem required involvement of other departments, the issue will be discussed in the meeting," he said.

Mr. Mittal said the move would enable the district administration to identify and categorise problems, which were of a serious nature and needed immediate attention. "For example, fund allocation to the medical and health department could be enhanced in the event of the outbreak of fevers in a specific area. Similarly, the committees will also chalk out long-term plans to solve pending problems like road traffic and sanitation."
