Call to improve lot of SCs, STs

HYDERABAD: The Union Minister of State for Health, Panabaka Lakshmi, urged general insurance employees to create awareness among people and help improve the lot of the underprivileged among the Scheduled Castes and Tribes.

She was speaking at a seminar on "Dr. B.R. Ambedkar - thought and ideology," held by the State unit of the All-India SC/ST General Insurance Employees Welfare Association. She said things had improved from the days when the SCs and STs were treated as `untouchables'. But problems continued to plague them, she said, adding that awareness would enable people fight problems.

The MP from Amalapuram, G.V. Harsha Kumar said SC, ST employees in the banking and insurance sectors were facing caste discrimination.
