THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The road development works in the Capital city will be complete by mid-2007, enabling easy access to any destination within the city, according to P.K. Venugopal, chairman, Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority (TRIDA). As many as 14 major roads covering a total length of 42 kms, including the MG Road, will be developed under a project designed to meet the requirements of the next 15 years, he said at a `Meet the Press' organised here on Sunday evening by the Kesari Journalists' Trust. Of the two grade separators designed for the city, one, the under pass at Palayam, is to be thrown open on Monday. The other component comprises the two flyovers at Bakery Junction and Thakaraparambu, which are also to be sequentially completed in a time-bound manner. The acquisition of land for the development of the Airport-Palayam road has been completed. The stretch from the RR Lamp junction to Kawdiar is to be developed, while still retaining it as a heritage zone, Mr.Venugopal said. There will be added emphasis on the use of the Kazhakkuttom-Kovalam bye-pass. A road linking the MC Road and the NH-47 has been proposed from Thykkad, near Venjaramoodu, to Kazhakkuttom. A five-acre land has been acquired at Eanchakkal on the bye-pass to relocate the bus terminal from Thampanoor. All the long-distance buses will then be operated from this new terminal and Thampanoor will operate mofussil and city services. Referring to the Vizhinjam harbour project, Mr.Venugopal said that talks were on with financial agencies within the country for its execution. If there are no bidders showing interest in the project, even after the extended date for submitting tenders, the project worth Rs.1,800 crores, will still be initiated without further delay, latest by next April, he said. Babu Jacob, former chief secretary and adviser to the Government on Urban Renewal Projects, was also present.
