On July 17, a few burglary attempts were reported from Lakshmi Nagar housing colony in Pattom. A few days earlier, household articles valued at more than Rs.1 lakhs was reported stolen from the house of John Mathew in Ebenezer Lane. Burglaries were reported from houses in Nalanchira, Palakode Lane, Kuravankonam and Vayalikkada in Peroorkada. In all the cases, the thieves had entered the houses by breaking open weakly secured doors. The burglars had shown a preference for gold ornaments, cash and electronic consumer items that could be easily disposed. Night-time burglaries were also reported from Madathunada and Pathirpalli areas, near Nalanchira. Most of the recent thefts in the city had occurred under the cover of darkness and rain between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. Circle Inspector, Peroorkada, V. Suresh Kumar said three persons had been identified in connection with the series of thefts and burglary attempts. In the past 10 days, no incident of burglary had been reported from these areas. City Commissioner Balaram Kumar Upadhyaya had detailed additional men for patrolling burglary prone areas in Peroorkada.
Anti-social elements
The CI said some anti-social elements in the locality were behind the burglary attempts in Pattom and adjoining areas. The attempts were aimed more at creating panic in the locality. "The police are using autorickshaws and unmarked police vehicles to patrol the areas at night," he added. As many as 72 burglaries were reported in the city up to March. More than 60 per cent of the cases reported this year had been detected and the loot recovered, a senior official said.
