16 hurt in cylinder blast

NEW DELHI: At least 16 people, including a Delhi police sub-inspector and seven children, sustained burn injuries when a cooking gas cylinder exploded in a dairy at Kalkaji in South Delhi on Sunday. The condition of at least four persons was reported to be serious.

According to the police, a call was received by the Kalkaji police around 4-15 p.m. claiming that a cooking gas cylinder was leaking at Nathu Dairy in Gali No. 15 at Govindpuri in Kalkaji.

Bt the time the Govindpuri police post in-charge, SI Raj Kumar Atree, and team arrived at the spot, a fire had already started. At least five cooking gas cylinders had caught fire. The fire brigade was informed and five fire tenders pressed into service.

Earlier, when the police were trying to evacuate people, one of the cylinders exploded. Around the same time, SI Atree saw a boy trapped in the fire and managed to take him to a safe place. However, in the process, he sustained 65 per cent injuries.

Apart from the sub-inspector, three others sustained serious burn injuries. The injured have been admitted to the burns ward of Safdarjung Hospital.

Arrested for disposing off body

NEW DELHI: Two persons have been arrested by the North-West Delhi police while they were allegedly trying to dispose of the body of an unidentified man.

On Sunday, head constable Kanwal Singh was returning home after duty when he noticed a woman with two children sitting on a bench. Later, two men joined her and they all started walking away in a suspicious manner. Sensing that something was amiss, the alert head constable immediately ran towards them and caught the woman and one of the men. The arrested man has been identified as Shiv Raj, a 35-year-old native of Uttar Pradesh.

Woman commits suicide

NEW DELHI: A 28-year-old housewife committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of her home at Dabri in South-West Delhi on Sunday.

According to the police, Uma Tiwari -- wife of Rohit Tiwari -- was being harassed by Rohit for quite some time and this drove her to take the drastic step. The couple had been married for the past eight years and had two children. Rohit has been arrested.

Two arrested for auto-lifting

NEW DELHI: Two alleged auto-lifters have been arrested by the North-West Delhi police in separate incidents. The police have recovered two stolen motorcycles and one scooter from the accused.

According to the police, the accused, Anish Singh, was arrested when he could not produce the documents of the motorcycle he was riding on GT Karnal Road on July 29. The police said Anishhad stolen the motorcycle from Karol Bagh and was planning to dispose it of when arrested. In another case on the same day, one Meenu was arrested at Bawana in North-West Delhi with a motorcycle stolen from Haryana. A stolen scooter was also recovered from his possession.

Held with illicit liquor

NEW DELHI: A 26-year-old man was arrested by the West Delhi police for allegedly possessing illicit liquor on Saturday.

The accused, identified as Praveen Kumar, was arrested at Rajouri Garden when 23 cartons of whisky were recovered from his car.
