BANGALORE: To create awareness and encourage students to take up outdoor activities, a one-day workshop on kite making, flying and aeromodelling was inaugurated here on Sunday.

Launching the workshop, National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) director, Dr. A.R. Upadhaya, advised the children not to neglect outdoor activities.

About 100 students from 10 city schools were selected to participate in the "Spreading Happiness through kite flying" theme event. They were given kite kits to make kites and fly them.

The event was organised by the National Aerospace Laboratories, in association with the Aeronautical Society of India.

Team Mangalore, a non-profit organisation known for its specialised kites, holds the record for flying the largest kite in the country. A number of individual entries of interesting kites were also flown as part of the contest. Three winning entries would now get a joy ride in NAL's Hansa aircraft.

Capt. Madhavan and his team conducted a demonstration of aeromodelling during the later part of the event. The aeromodels included simple gliders and sophisticated radio-controlled powered models.
