Introduction of English

Sir, — By postponing the introduction of English, the strength in government schools will dwindle. Parents now want their wards to study English and therefore admit them to private English-medium schools.

Ironically, the people who are demanding that the Government postpone the introduction of English send their children to English-medium schools. Early learning will help the child gain command over the language.

Bus service inadequate

Sir, — For a number of years, despite of numerous representations, the bus services to Byrasandra are inadequate. Route No 182 (Shivajinagar to Padmanabhnagar) with a frequency of one bus an hour was in operation for some time. The route was changed suddenly, and this has caused inconvenience to the commuters.

The BMTC should introduce regular bus service in this area.

Ban on liquor

Sir, — It is a surprise that the State's revenue has gone up by Rs. 800 crores in the first quarter itself following the introduction of VAT.

The Government should impose a ban on liquor. The revenue loss caused by the ban will be smaller when compared to the accruing income through VAT. The Government, which claims to be "pro-poor", should do something in this regard.

Faster train service

Sir, — On July 20, the Kurla-Coimbatore train left Bangalore two hours late. However, the train reached Coimbatore on time the next morning. Such being the case, it is not clear why the non-stop Bangalore-Chennai Shatabdi Express cannot reach Chennai in four hours.

Superfast train needed

Sir, — Train No 6518 Mangalore-Yeshvanthpur Express, via Mysore, is said to leave at 19.30 hours, according to the Railway timetable from July 2005 to June 2006. It reaches Hassan at 00.30 hours and leaves at 1.25 after an unnecessary 55-minute halt. The train reaches Mysore at 4.30 a.m. and leaves at 5 a.m.

It takes 13 hours 15 minutes to cover 453 km from Mangalore to Yeshvanthpur, and the average speed of the train is less than 35 kmph.

This forces people to travel by bus, which covers the distance in less than eight hours.
