NEW DELHI: Sania Mirza has reached a career-best ranking of 59 in the latest list released by the WTA on Monday. With 45 points coming from the tournament in Stanford where she lost the second round to Venus Williams after making the main draw as a lucky-loser, the 18-year-old Sania has taken her tally to 605.25 points that include 179.00 quality points. The Hyderabad lass had been ranked 64 last week after her good run at Cincinnati when she picked up 58 points. These points do compare favourably with the 48 WTA points that Sania collected at Wimbledon after a fierce show-down in the second round against the U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia. In fact, Sania has been able to make a steady climb up the ladder as she is defending very little so far.
Qualifies for Acura Classic
Sania took another firm step towards adding more points as she qualified into the main draw of the Acura Classic tournament in San Diego. The top-seeded Sania beat the 196th ranked Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine 6-4, 7-6(2) in the second and final qualifying round after having dismissed the 134th ranked Galina Voskoboeva of Russia 6-1, 6-1 in the first round. Sania has been drawn to meet fellow-qualifier, the 78th ranked Tathiana Garbin of Italy in the first round. The other Indian in the draw, Shikha Uberoi lost 1-6, 0-6 in the second round of the qualifying event to Akiko Nakamura of Japan, after having beaten Lindsey Nelson of the US 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 in the first round.
