Sri Lanka meets West Indies

Special Correspondent

DAMBULLA: The good news for Sri Lanka is that Sanath Jayasuriya's shoulder injury is not as bad as it seemed.

"Sanath is lucky to have not suffered any major injury. The scan revealed some fluid, but nothing serious. We'll take stock of the situation tomorrow," manager Mike Tissera said.

However, Jayasuriya will not play in Tuesday's IndianOil Cup tri-series day/night match against the West Indies at the Rangiri Dambulla Stadium. Nor will Chaminda Vaas, for that matter.

The experienced left-arm seamer missed the opening match against India due to a hamstring injury. "We'll try and play him in important matches only," skipper Marvan Atapattu said.

Vaas' new-ball partner Nuwan Zoysa will miss the Dambulla leg completely. The left-armer developed back spasms prior to the opening round match, which the host won by three wickets with 10 deliveries to spare. "He should figure in the second leg in Colombo," said Atapattu.

Jayasuriya, who batted with his right shoulder strapped against India, accompanied the squad for practice but stayed on the sidelines.

Elite club

The 36-year-old left-hander needs 33 runs to join Sachin Tendulkar and Inzamam-ul-Haq in the exclusive 10,000-run ODI club. Jayasuriya is keen to play in the latter half of the tournament.

Upul Taranga, the 20-year-old left-handed opener from Balapitiya, is expected to make his debut.

The West Indies is hoping to score its first victory in the competition.
