Agassi beats Muller for his fourth title at Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES: Top-seeded Andre Agassi beat Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 6-4, 7-5 in the Mercedes-Benz Cup final on Sunday for his 60th career title.

Coming back from a two-month layoff because of a chronic sciatic nerve problem, the 35-year-old Agassi capped an impressive run through the tournament that he also won in 1998, 2001 and 2002. This title puts him seventh on the list of singles title winners behind Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl, John McEnroe, his great rival Pete Sampras, Bjorn Borg and Guillermo Vilas.

"It feels amazing. These moments don't happen very often any more and I'm taking it in," Agassi said after winning for the first time in almost a year.

"It's great to let my game fly and to be eager to scamper after shots you're not even sure you're going to get," he said.

He obviously was relieved that the nerve injury is better.

"I'd never felt that before and it's a scary thing when you're looking for a doctor to tell you, `You're not playing any more.' It's a helpless feeling," Agassi said.

"It was very possible, and still is, that it gets to a point when I can't do it."

Agassi broke unseeded Muller once in each set; in the first game of the match, and for 6-5 in the second.

The game before, Muller had set point on Agassi's serve, but clobbered a second serve into the net.

Clijsters triumphs

Fourth seeded Kim Clijsters easily defeated Venus Williams 7-5, 6-2 for her third Bank of the West Classic title at Stanford.

The Belgian never allowed Williams to gain any type of control.

"I did a lot of things right today," said Clijsters. "It was the tennis and not so much important as to who I had just beat.

The results (all finals): At Los Angeles (Mercedes-Benz Cup): Andre Agassi bt Gilles Muller 6-4, 7-5.

At Umag (Croatian Open): Guillermo Coria bt Carlos Moya 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

At Stanford (Bank of the West Classic): Kim Clijsters bt Venus Williams 7-5, 6-2.
