Bhavani bags title

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu's Bhavani Tirumurti won the girls' under-16 title by beating C. Rajeswari 6-1, 6-0 in the UC MAS Singaram Pillai tennis tournament, which concluded at the Singaram Pillai courts, Villivakkam here on Saturday.

In the boys' under-16 final, Bangalore's Preetham Roy Moras used his power-packed service and fine groundstrokes to good effect to subdue Gugan Varma of Chennai 6-1, 6-4. Moras, coached by former Davis Cupper Prahlad Srinath, was in a spot of bother when he was broken while serving for the match at 5-3. The 16-year-old, however, recovered quickly to serve out the match in the 10th game when Varma's forehand went long.

The results (finals): Children u-10: Alla Abhishek bt S. Siddharth Reddy 7-4. Boys u-12: Dharma bt Niranjan R Ram 6-1, 6-3. Boys u-14: (singles): Irfan Hussain (TN) bt S. Prasanth (TN) 3-6, 6-3, 6-2; (doubles): S. Prasanth & Saran Patil bt Deepak Swaminathan & Iswar Prasad 6-1, 6-3. Boys u-16: Preetham Roy Moras (Kar) bt Gugan Verma (TN) 6-1, 6-4. Girls u-12: Nithya B Raj bt R. Sharmila 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Girls u-14: C. Rajeswari (TN) bt Susita (Ori) 6-2, 6-2; (doubles): J. Doondi & Nikhi bt K. Supriya & Sai J. Lavanya 6-0, 6-0. Girls u-16: Bhavani Tirumurti (TN) bt C. Rajeswari (TN) 6-1, 6-0.

Eight players qualify

The following eight players have qualified from the T.P. Textiles Tamil Nadu State junior (under-19) chess championship, which concluded here on Saturday, to the National junior championship to be held here in November.

Boys: P. Karthikeyan, M. Shyamsundar (both from Chennai), T.U. Navin Kanna (Tiruvallur) and R.K. Ranjith (Kancheepuram).

Girls: P. Sivasankari (Tiruvallur), R. Preethi (Madurai), S. Athirai (Dindigul) and S. Harini (Kancheepuram).

Jamal Mohamed triumphs

Jamal Mohamed College scored a 41-11 win over St. Joseph's College and claimed the title in the Bharathidasan University inter-collegiate netball tournament held at the Anna Stadium here recently. The Senior Regional Manager of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT), G. Mohan inaugurated the final and Regional Inspector of Physical Education, Yesudos gave away the prizes.

Suriyarajan wins title

Suriyarajan of Nehruji Memorial Municipal HSS won the boys' under-18 title in the Dindigul district open chess tournament conducted by Anand Chess Academy here on Sunday.

The results: Boys: (u-18): 1. Suriyarajan, 2. Balasubramanian (Arul Jothi HSS); 3. Sujai (APA College, Palani). Under-14: 1. Maheswaran (Akshya, Palani), 2. Ram Prasad (Akshya, Dgl), 3. M. Vignesh (Devi MHSS). Under-12: 1. Alagu Subramanian (Vidya HSS), 2. Eswar (SMBMHSS), 3. Vetrivel (St. Mary's). Under-10: 1. Balaji (Rani Meyyammai HSS, Kujiliamparai), 2. Kailas (SRHSS); 3. Azaruddin (KK Ayya Nadar Matric School).

Girls: (under-18): 1. Subrija (St. Joseph's), 2. Reka (SMBM), 3. Kaliammal (Govt. HSS. Dgl). Under-14: 1. Sowmini (SMBM), 2. Vidya Alamelu (Maharishi), 3. Nagapriya (St. Joseph's). Under-12: 1. Aarthi (RMHSS, Kujiliamparai), 2. Pavitha (St. Joseph's), 3. Mina Preethi (Devi MHSS, Palani). Under-10: 1. Abirami (RMHSS), 2. J. Oviya (Devi MHSS), 3. Ishwarya Lakshmi (Devi MHSS).

B Zone wins title

B Zone Reds claimed the Madurai Kamaraj University badminton title defeating A Zone Greens 3-0 for its third win in the last and crucial match in the four-team inter-zone league here on Saturday.

The results (league): B Zone Reds bt A Zone Greens 3-0 (M. Virumandi bt Murugan 15-10, 15-12; Rajkumar bt Veerarajan 15-13, 15-8; Rajkumar & Suresh bt Vino Williams & Veerarajan 15-12, 15-10).

Badminton tournament

The Velammal International School is organising a Rs. 30,000 prize money State inter-school badminton tournament at the school premises, Surapedu, Chennai, from Aug. 14 to 16. The event will be held in Under-10, 13, 16, 19 categories. Entries close on August 12 with Vijay Dayanidhi, Organising Secretary, Ph: 26247562.
