Live telecast of legislature proceedings by Doordarshan likely from next session

Mr. Patil said the Government would consider the unanimous suggestion of the House to hold one of the four scheduled sessions of the legislature in north Karnataka

BANGALORE: The Government would take steps to ensure live telecast of the proceedings of both Houses of the State legislature by Doordarshan from the next session, the Minister for Law and Parliamentary, H.K. Patil, told the Legislative Council on Monday.

Replying to the debate on the "Karnataka Conduct of Government Business in the State Legislature Bill 2005," Mr. Patil said the Government would consider the unanimous suggestion of the House to hold one of the four scheduled sessions of both the Houses of the legislature in north Karnataka.

His party (Congress) had submitted a proposal to the Government when it was in the Opposition, he said.

Raising the issue, the Chairman, V.R. Sudarshan, said that the Government had already constituted a committee to look into the issue.

It had submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, urging him to instruct the Union Government to bear 50 per cent of the cost of telecast.

The Government had permitted Doordarshan and private television channels to cover the proceedings on a regular basis but it was not live telecast, he said. "Mukhyamantri" Chandru (BJP), M.P. Nadagouda (Janata Dal- U), V. S. Ugrappa (Congress) and others suggested that the Government hold a legislature session in north Karnataka.

Such a measure will help address the problem of regional imbalances as mentioned in the D.M. Nanjundappa Committee report and assuage the feelings of the people of that region. It should create infrastructure for holding the session. An official committee had conducted a preliminary survey of the infrastructure in Hubli, Dharwad, Gulbarga and Bijpaur for the purpose.
