Shazuli among leaders

Arvind Aaron

CHENNAI: Third seed Syed Anwar Shazuli of ICF, Chennai scored an effortless victory over E.R.S. Vijayasarathi to be among the 13 leaders, with full points at the end of the third round in the Adyar Times FIDE Rated Open Chess Tournament played here on Monday.

Shazuli took advantage of the undeveloped black pieces to win after Vijayasarathi blundered material on the 24th move. However, the other seeds did not have an easy day two.

Former National `A' player and No.4 seed, V. Subramanian of MTC, Chennai, who is making a comeback after writing two chess books, tasted his first defeat when R.K. Ranjith won a pawn and beat him.

Wijesuriyas on top

In the morning session, IM P. Mithrakanth of NLC, Neyveli was shocked by Chennai school girl P. Uthra. Mithrakanth played well to win a queen for rook and bishop but underestimated black's pawn advance and had to give up his queen for a rook and then lose in 59 moves.
