CHENNAI: The Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, who was not permitted to conduct special pujas inside the sanctum sanctorum of the Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple at Rameswaram on July 14 and 15, has issued legal notice to two officials. The notice, issued on his behalf by advocate R. Yashod Vardhan, said the Acharya was prevented from entering the sanctum sanctorum "on a specious plea that they were under instructions" from higher officials. On July 15, when he again went to the temple, the employees said "they were likely to lose their jobs if they were to permit him to enter the temple and perform poojas." They also said that they would be arrested if any attempt was made to enter the temple and that police and security arrangements had been made to prevent the Acharya from entering the temple. It said the Acharya had been "deprived of exercising his lawful right recognised for several centuries," it called upon the Secretary of the Tamil Development, Culture and Religious Endowments Department and the Commissioner of the HR & CE Department to furnish the copies of orders based on which the Acharya was prevented from exercising his rights in the temples of Tamil Nadu.
