MADURAI: : A public interest litigation petition has been filed in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court to direct the Social Welfare Secretary to confer the powers of a civil court on the Tamil Nadu Commission for Women. Justice K.P. Sivasubramaniam and Justice S.K. Krishnan issued notice to the Secretary. A. Rajini, a lawyer here, said the Government, through a March 19, 1993 order, constituted the commission. As per the order, the Commission, chaired by a retired judge, should have six other members, among whom a member-secretary would be nominated by the Government. Though the commission was entrusted with investigating and examining all matters relating to safeguards provided for women under the Constitution, the Government failed to confer statutory powers on it, she alleged.
