Poverty reduction scheme soon in Theni district

Four places identified for introducing the scheme The main objective is to improve the living standard of people below poverty line

THENI: : The State Government will introduce Tamil Nadu Pudhu Vazhvu Thittam, a special scheme for poverty reduction and empowering the ultra poor with the World Bank fund in the State shortly. To begin with, four places in Theni district will be covered, said PWD Minister, O. Paneerselvam.

Addressing a review committee meeting at the Collectorate here on Sunday, he said Andipatti, K.Mayiladumparai, Periakulam and Bodinaickanur had been identified for introduction of the scheme. The main objective of the scheme was to improve the living standard of people living below poverty line and empower them. First, the scheme would be launched in G. Usilampatti in Andipatti taluk on trial basis this month.

The State Government had sanctioned crores of rupees for the district this year for improving infrastructure.

Five noon meal centres at a cost of Rs.4.2 lakhs, classrooms, laboratories, toilets and drinking facilities would be created in 49 high and higher secondary schools at a cost of Rs.14.90 crores this year.

Percolation ponds would be dug up at a cost of Rs.1.03 crores in Pullimankombai and Dharmathupatti and tank construction work was in progress at Ammapatti and Seepalakottai. To improve sanitation facilities, Mr. Paneerselvam said underground drainage scheme would be implemented at a cost of Rs.50.66 crores in Cumbum, Bodi and Uthamapalayam municipalities.

Besides, the State Government has allocated Rs.20 crores for improving education system and facilities in Kallar reclamation schools in the district.

Collector Rajesh Lakhoni presided over the function.

Later, the Minister disbursed coconut saplings to 45 women at a function held at G. Kallupatti in Periakulam union.
