ALAPPUZHA: Heavy rain that lashed the district during the past two days inundated low-lying areas in the district. Incessant rain has damaged property and crops estimated at several lakhs. Eight relief camps have been set up in the district to extend aid to the affected. Kuttanad taluk has been the worst hit in the recent rain. Floodwaters have submerged several areas of the region. Alappuzha District Collector K.R. Muraleedharan has announced that the schools, up to higher secondary level, in Kuttanad taluk would remain closed on August 2 and 3. The Kuttanad Engineering College at Pulinkunnu has been closed. According to an official estimate, the loss to property and crops has been pegged at Rs.2.2 crores. The loss to crops alone amounts to Rs.92 lakhs. Hundreds of houses have been damaged in the rain. The losses are expected to rise during the final estimates. As many as 232 families have been evacuated from the flood-hit areas and rehabilitated at the relief camps and 819 persons provided shelter at the camps. One relief camp each has been opened at Karthigappally, Chenganoor and Cherthala taluks and five camps at the Kuttanad taluk. Water has entered houses in several areas in Kuttanad. Almost all the roads in the taluk, oad, have been submerged in the floodwaters. Vehicular traffic on these roads has been stopped.
Power supply has been disrupted in almost all areas in Kuttanad. However, the communication system is functioning normally. K.C. Joseph, Kuttanad MLA, has demanded free rations for families affected by the flood. District Collector K.R. Muraleedharan has issued a warning to all those residing by the side of the rivers in Chenganoor, Mavelikkara and Kuttanad taluks. The public should keep vigil as the shutters of Moozhiyar dam has been opened and the floodwaters could enter their homes, he said.
