HUBLI: Mahadev Mallappa Jyotinaykar has been appointed as the Vice-President of the Karnataka Samajwadi Party's Hubli-Dharwad Mahanagar Zilla unit, according to a press release issued by Govindraj Harivan, President of the unit. The other office-bearers are Allabaksh Kacchi, General Secretary; Nijalingappa Manappa Pattar, Treasurer; S.B. Deshpande, Avinash Pande, Ishwar M. Hubballi, Sangaiah B. Belurmath and D.K. Inaugurated

HUBLI: Madan B. Desai, member of the local board of the State Bank of India, inaugurated the new premises of the bank's Hirepet branch here recently. Shankranna Munavalli, President, Karnatak Chamber of Commerce and Industry, was the chief guest. Presiding over the function, P.K. Inspector suspended

HUBLI: Narayan Nadamani, Police Commissioner, Hubli-Dharwad, has suspended a police inspector for dereliction of duty. It is said that the Commissioner had directed A.N. Gali, Police Inspector, Bendigeri Police Station, not to go on leave as his service was required for security duty. The inspector ignored the direction and proceeded on leave. — Staff Correspondent

Spirit seized

HUBLI: The Hubli police raided a house at Millatnagar on Mantur Road here on Sunday and seized spirit and other goods valued at Rs. 50,000. The police said the accused, Giri Habib, is absconding. The Bendigeri police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Illicit liquor

HUBLI: Officials of the Excise Department have seized illicit liquor valued at Rs. 18,000 stored in a shop near Bankapur Chowk here. Gajanan Venkappa Bhandari has been arrested in this connection. — Staff Correspondent

Woman held

BIDAR: Police have arrested a woman and recovered cash allegedly stolen by her.

According to the police, Baburao More, retired principal of a college, boarded a bus in Bidar on Saturday. He checked his purse after someone suggested that his pocket has been picked, and found Rs. 50,000 missing.

A police team arrested Rana Bai of Mangarwade colony and recovered cash from her. The accused has been remanded in judicial custody. — Staff Correspondent

Mulberry cultivation

BIDAR: The climate in Bidar is suited for mulberry cultivation, which has been taken up in over 102 acres in the district. The area under it will be further increased this year, according to the Silk Extension Officer, S. Wage.

He told farmers during on-site training in Rekulagi on Sunday that silk rearing gives financial stability to farmers. Progressive farmers Sangappa Malipatil and Manikrao Borale, senior scientist Satish Kulkarni, Silk Assistant S.R. Shivnagi, gram panchayat president Samiulla Husseini, were present. — Staff Correspondent

Two held on charge of issuing fake permits

BELLARY: Sleuths of the District Crime Investigation Bureau arrested two persons accused of selling fake permits for transportation of iron ore, in front of Hotel Ashok Comforts here on Sunday.

The arrested have been identified as Srikant Reddy, 37, of Poddatur village in the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and Raju of Hospet in Bellary district.

The fake permits were being sold at Rs. 1.30 lakh, a press release said. — Staff Correspondent

Minister visits

forest area

HASSAN: The Minister for Public Works and Energy, H.D. Revanna, recently visited Ramadevarahalla forest area, which is rich in sandalwood trees. He assured the Forest Department officials of getting sanctioned Rs. 1.18 crore for fencing and construction of watchtowers. He also directed the Hassan Superintendent of Police to extend help to the Forest Department in protecting the sandalwood trees.

Ramadevarahalla has been declared a protected area and people are prohibited from entering the area without permission, said a press release from the Deputy Conservator of Forests, S. Shekar. — Staff Correspondent

Extension of

deadline sought

HASSAN: Farmers from various parts of the district assembled in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner here on Monday and urged the Government to extend the last date to pay the crop insurance premium.

As insurance companies had made it mandatory to present title deeds to pay the premium, there was a huge queue in front of the office of the tahsildar to obtain title deeds on Saturday. As bank officials refused to accept payments without title deeds, the farmers urged the Deputy Commissioner to intervene in the matter.

The Deputy Commissioner, K.H. Ashwathanarayana Gowda, has assured farmers that he will direct the bank authorities to accept payment of the premium on presenting patta (right over the land). — Staff Correspondent

Drinking water contaminated

BIDAR: The people of Mirzapur (M) have complained that sewage is getting mixed with drinking water in their village.

They said water from the gutters is seeping into the ground near borewells which supply drinking water to the village. Steps should be taken to stop this immediately, the villagers said in a memorandum submitted to the Bidar Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer, Antony Mendonca. Dashrath Halage, Shivakumar Chippe and others have signed the memorandum. — Staff Correspondent

Man arrested, liquor seized

BIDAR: Excise officials have arrested a person while he was allegedly transporting 180 bottles of illicit liquor valued at Rs 4,500 at Boral Cross in Aurad.

A police team arrested the accused, Shivkumar Jojna. Another accused, Rajkumar, is absconding.

Man dies in wall collapse

CHITRADURGA: One person died in a wall collapse on Monday on the outskirts of Chitradurga. The victim has been identified as Dada Peer, 48, a painter who was living at Cholur Gudda.

According to the police, Dada Peer was sleeping very close to the wall, which was fully damp and collapsed on him in the early hours of Monday killing him on the spot.

Chitradurga Kote police have registered the case. — Staff Correspondent

Mumbai floods claim family from Bijapur

BIJAPUR: Three members of a family from Bijapur fell victim to the floods in Mumbai last Thursday, according to reports received here on Monday.

Ramachar Prahlad Sangam, 62, a retired employee of the Department of Posts; his wife, Shantabayi, 55; and mother, Seethabayi, 80, died after being trapped in their flooded house at Bazalpur on the outskirts of Mumbai. The family had settled in Mumbai after Mr. Sangam's retirement. They had decided to come back to Bijapur and had started constructing a house here, according to Mr. Sangam's sister, Lakshmi, a resident of Rajendranagar here. — Staff Correspondent

Some trains diverted, cancelled

BANGALORE: The following trains will run via Satara, Jalgaon, Manmad, Daund and Pune until further notice: train nos. 6505/6506 Gandhidham-Bangalore City-Gandhidham Express; train nos. 6507/6508 Jodhpur-Bangalore City-Jodhpur Express, and train nos. 6509/6510 Ajmer-Bangalore City-Ajmer Express.

The following trains have been cancelled on Tuesday because of floods in Maharashtra: train no. 1018 Bangalore City-Dadar Chalukya Express from Bangalore and train no. 1014 Coimbatore-Bangalore City Kurla Express from Coimbatore and running via Bangalore.

The Udyan Express will run up to Pune till August 6 from Bangalore. All trains scheduled to leave from Mumbai's Chatrapathi Shivaji Terminus (CSTM), Dadar and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus on Tuesday have also been cancelled, according to a press release issued by South Western Railway. — Staff Reporter

PGCET counselling from today

BANGALORE: The first round of the PGCET counselling for MCA seats will begin on Tuesday at the PGCET Cell attached to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belgaum, and B.M.S. College of Engineering, Bangalore.

As many as 1,897 government quota seats and 633 surrendered management quota seats will be available for selection by the 2,302 candidates assigned ranks by the VTU.

The second round of counselling for MBA concluded on Monday. The MBA casual vacancy round is scheduled to be held from August 8 to 12. The detailed casual vacancy round schedule is available on the website www.vtu.ac.in, a VTU release said. — Staff Reporter

M.S. Zahed elected IIPE Chairman

Bangalore: M.S. Zahed, Chairman and Managing Director, HMT Ltd. has been elected national Chairman of the Indian Institution of Production Engineers (IIPE) for 2005-07. Mr. Zahed is the first Chairman and Managing Director of HMT to head the IIPE, a statement here said.

Daily water supply sought

MYSORE: Members of the Mysore Agenda Task Force (MATF) and Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP) will hold a meeting at Vani Vilas Water Works from 10.30 a.m. on August 2 to urge the city corporation authorities to supply water to the city everyday.

According to a press statement from convenor of the Water Supply and Sanitary Working Group of MATF, M. Lakshmana, the corporation is supplying water once in three days even though the KRS Reservoir is full. — Staff Correspondent

Free cancer camp

MYSORE: A free cancer detection camp will be conducted at Preethi Cancer Centre in Lakshmipuram in the city from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on August 4.

According to a press statement from the centre, patients with abnormal bleeding, swelling, lump or hardness in any part of the body, change of voice, difficulty in swallowing or sore throat can attend the camp.

Compensation

Chamarajanagar: The president of the Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha and Chamarajanagar MLA, Vatal Nagaraj, has handed over a cheque of Rs. 50,000 as compensation to the family of Chikkatayamma, who died in a fire at Doddamole village near here recently.

Mr. Nagaraj visited the village on Sunday and sanctioned Rs. 25,000 to construct a new house.

He also handed over a cheque for Rs. 5000 as the first instalment. — Correspondent
