Breast-feeding awareness campaign begins in city

Jatha to be taken out on Saturday by medical, nursing students

MYSORE: With a view to create an awareness about the benefits of breast-feeding, the Indian Paediatricians' Association are observing breast-feeding week in the city from Monday.

The campaign was inaugurated at Cheluvamba Hospital in Mysore on Monday morning by the Principal of the Mysore Medical College, Raghothama Rao.

The Hospital Superintendent, Damayanthi, and the Mysore District Health Officer, Krishnaswamy, were present.

Organised by Rotary Central, Inner Wheel Club of Mysore Central, and the Breast-feeding Promotion Network of India, the campaign will feature lectures at various hospitals across the city.

An awareness jatha will also be taken out on the issue on August 6.

The campaign hopes to propagate the advantages of breast-feeding and highlight the problems faced by children who are not breast-fed.

The campaign also seeks to shatter the myths related with breast-feeding.

"The myths in the minds of mothers over breast-feeding will be removed through the lectures," said V. Krishnamurthy, President of the Mysore unit of the Indian Paediatricians' Association.

Lectures

On August 2, a lecture has been organised at the Paediatrics Department in Mission Hospital, where Dr. Usha Kiran will speak at 2.15 p.m. On August 3, Dr. Pushpalatha will deliver a lecture at 11 a.m. at Ranganathapura Community Hall.

Dr. Sarika Prasad will speak at Vani Vilas Government Hospital at 11 a.m. on August 4. Dr. Usha Kiran will explain the benefits of breast milk during a speech at Bannimantap Lion's Schools at 11 a.m. on August 5.

An awareness jatha will be taken out in the city on August 6 by students of medical and nursing colleges to promote breast-feeding.

The jatha, which will start from Mysore Medical College at 10 a.m., will be inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, K.T. Balakrishna.

The valedictory function of the campaign will be held at Rajendra Bhavan Auditorium, JSS Hospital, at 10.30 a.m. on August 7.

The Deputy Commissioner, S. Selva Kumar, will be the chief guest.

Dr. Narayanappa will deliver a special lecture during the function.
