MUMBAI: Mumbai woke up once again to heavy rain and many parts reported water logging and traffic disruptions on Monday. Appeals were made on radio and television asking the people to stay indoors. Local trains ran almost empty and offices reported thin attendance. Traffic on the arterial roads in central and north Mumbai was disrupted and the western express highway closed for a while due to water logging. After the level rose in the Mithi river, which flows through Kurla, an alert was issued to residents of Andheri, Bandra, Kalina and neighbouring areas. About 2,000 people were evacuated. At Kalina, Army and Navy boats ferried essential supplies. Flooding was also reported from central Mumbai, the western suburbs of Andheri, Khar, Dahisar and Santa Cruz, and the eastern suburbs of Kurla, Chembur, Wadala and Chunabhatti. Air traffic was disrupted.The suburbs recorded 208.1 mm of rain and the city 161 mm in the 24 hours ended 8.30 a.m. on Monday. From 8.30 a.m to 5.30 p.m., the city received 52.1 mm and the suburbs 76.4 mm. The weather bureau has forecast heavy to very heavy rain in the next 24 hours. The Government, which declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Monday, extended it to Tuesday also. Trains on the Central Railway were badly affected and the Harbour line was shut down after the track was flooded.
