MANGALORE: Forty-one persons, including 10 women, died of AIDS in Dakshina Kannada between January and May 2005, A. M. Kunjappa, Chief Executive Officer of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, said here on Monday. Mr. Kunjappa was speaking at the District AIDS Management Committee meeting at the office of the zilla panchayat. He said AIDS has been found among 167 persons during the same period in the district. He appealed to the people and voluntary organisations to coordinate with the Government to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS. People should not humiliate those living with AIDS and should treat them with compassion. When some representatives of voluntary organisations alleged that AIDS patients are neglected in hospitals, Mr. Kunjappa asked the taluk medical officers to ensure that such incidents did not recur in hospitals and health centres. He directed the Deputy Director of Public Instruction to issue a circular to all heads of schools to admit HIV positive students to schools and not deny them admission. District Health and Family Welfare Officer Mohanraj was present.
