CHENNAI: A fire broke out in an electronic goods shop on Narasingapuram Street off Anna Salai on Monday destroying a large quantity of electronic goods.

Fire and Rescue Service personnel battled for about two hours to bring the blaze under control.

They said that around 2.45 p.m. the control room received a call that a fire was noticed on the first and mezzanine floors of the three-storeyed electronic goods shop.

A total of 10 fire tenders, a sky lift and 10 Metrowater tankers were pressed into service during the two-hour operation.

An electrical short circuit could have caused the fire, the authorities suspect.

Haphazard dumping

Fire officials said that electronic goods such as DVD and VCD players were stacked on the first and mezzanine floors of the shop, where the fire occurred. Haphazard dumping of the goods made it difficult to trace the exact location of the fire.

The authorities were forced to drill holes on the rear side of the building to douse the flames, they said.

Entry of fire tenders and Metrowater tankers into the street was delayed as many two-wheelers were parked on the narrow, congested road. Curious onlookers gathered in large numbers hampering fire fighting, and the Fire Department had to seek the help of policemen to regulate the crowd.

The fire fighting operations were supervised by V.Madurapandian, Deputy Director of Fire and Rescue Services, Northern Region and Meenakshi Vijayakumar, Divisional Fire Officer, North.
