The Students Editorial Entity of Kumarans (SEEK)-2005, an interschool cultural and literary fest, was held in Sri Kumaran High School (State Board) from July 28 to 30. M.S. Thimmappa, Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University, was the chief guest at the inaugural function. He said that the need of the hour is to provide quality education at affordable cost to the masses. "True education should not only develop the mind but also the whole body, including the heart," he said. He regretted that these days, education is blamed for all problems. "Education is not panacea for all banes," Dr. Thimmappa said. Know thyself, he said and added: "Knowing yourself is knowing everything." H.S. Goindi, senior vice-president (International Business) TVS Motors, presided and said: "We still use fraction of our brain although the technology has improved by leaps and bounds."
Sukumaran, president (OD & TQM), GMR Group, who was the guest of honour, said students need to confront many contradictions in their future. Meenakshi Balakrishnan, President - SEEK, said the fest provides an opportunity for students of various schools to share their experiences. This year there were 21 events and 63 schools participated. Sri Kumaran Children's Home (CBSE) bagged the overall rolling trophy. The runners-up trophy went to National Public School, Indiranagar. The `Strange Crew', a music band of college students enthralled the audience on the last day.
Annual prize day
Iqbal Ansari, Minister for Medical Education, and Gauri Trivedi, Secretary to the Governor, were the chief guests and distributed the special awards. Mr. Ansari said that illiteracy is regarded as the biggest of all problems. "Only by taking up intensive literacy programmes can we root out this menace," he said. He regretted that nearly 25 million children are still out of school, and added that universal education is the goal of the Government. He called upon students to keep away from vices and exhorted them to follow the ideals of the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Ms. Trivedi told the students to reflect on their school days as "these are the best days of your life." She urged them to be good citizens and think more for the country as well as the underprivileged children of society. Jagreeti Ghosh read out the annual report of the academic year 2004-05. Alok Bahl of standard five won the best all-rounder award and Debarun Dhar won `The Honour Roll Prize', an award instituted by the school principal, A. Ebenezer, for the student for outstanding conduct.
Prize distribution
Sr. Sandhya said that underprivileged children need a helping hand and added, "It is good to be kind." Vasantha Edward, Principal of Baldwin Girls High School, read the annual report of the academic year 2004-05. Lalitha Pratap read out the Baldwin Opportunity School report. Excellence in academics was the main criterion in choosing the students for the awards, said Sheila Mathew, Head of the Department of the junior school. Deepika T.S. of Baldwin Opportunity School won the best all-rounder award. Later, class-wise awards were distributed to the students of junior school. It was a captivating sight as young achievers gleefully came on stage, received the awards and searched for their parents, brothers or sisters or loved ones for applause.
