Idukki reels under the impact of heavy rain

  • Traffic restored in Thodupuzha taluk

  • Steps taken to prevent outbreak of diseases

    THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Idukki district has borne the brunt of the heavy rain in the last few days.

    Revenue Minister K.M. Mani said this in a communication here on Monday, asking District Collectors to take steps to tackle the situation.

    Those living near the Mullaperiyar Dam have been shifted. Officials of the Revenue, Forest and Minor Irrigation departments visited the place. The District Collector has been asked to take steps to make the Wagamon-Ulupooni road of the Kerala State Electricity Board in Peermade taluk.

    Traffic has been restored along the silted roads in Thodupuzha taluk. Landslips were reported in Venniyani, Velliyamattam and Kozhipalli. Those living in these places have been shifted. Crop loss in the district is being calculated. Six relief camps have been opened in Devikulam and Peermade taluks. As many as 886 persons from 213 families have been shifted to these camps. They are being provided free food and medicines. Thodupuzha, Devikulam, Peermade and Udubanchola taluks have been declared calamity-affected. As many as 235 houses in these taluks have been destroyed and 1,431 damaged. The loss has been put at Rs. 73.16 lakhs. The crop loss till June 29 has been put at Rs 1.61 crores. The damage to the Government building was placed at over Rs 3.13 crores. As many as 8,933 people have been affected. Damage to roads alone has been put at around Rs. 2 crores.

    In Palakkad district, 11 persons died till July 31. Forty-five houses were destroyed and 743 damaged. The damage in this regard was placed at Rs 29.34 lakhs and the crop loss at Rs 3.5 crores.

    Crop loss worth Rs. 127 lakhs was reported from Alappuzha district. Seventy houses have been destroyed and 1,177 damaged. Forty-nine villages have been affected.

    Crop loss in Thrissur district has been put at over Rs.4.15 lakhs. Three houses have been destroyed and 20 damaged. Steps have been taken to check sea erosion at Vadanapally. Steps have been taken to avert any danger in the event of opening of the shutters of the Sholayar Dam.

    93 families shifted

    In Kottayam, as many as 93 families have been shifted to four camps. A team of doctors are working under the District Medical Officer to prevent the outbreak of diseases. The loss in Pathanamthitta district has been put at Rs. 70 lakhs. Fifteen camps have been opened in Ernakulam district and 178 families have been shifted.
