Power crisis grips Capital

NEW DELHI: Almost the whole of Delhi reeled under a severe power crisis on Monday as the Northern Grid faced a massive shortfall of around 5,000 MW due to closure of various hydroelectric generating units supplying electricity to it. As a result, Delhiites had to bear the brunt of the 350 MW load-shedding during the day, while the peak demand touched 3,307 MW.

According to a spokesperson of the State Government's power transmission company, Delhi Transco Limited, several hydroelectric generating units, particularly in Himachal Pradesh, have been affected due to heavy rain and overflowing of rivers in the State. Moreover, some thermal power stations were not working at its optimum level, aggravating the problem further.

"The 1500-MW Nathpa Jhakri has been shut down, while some units of HPSEB have also stopped generating power. Then there are thermal plants like the one at Singrauli in U.P. facing some technical problems, " he added.
