Giovanni Lapentti and James Blake advance

WASHINGTON: Giovanni Lapentti of Ecuador beat Nicolas Mahut of France 6-2, 6-3 on Monday at the Legg Mason Classic, earning a second-round meeting against top-seeded Andy Roddick.

Roddick had a first-round bye in the event, which was hurt by the late withdrawal of Andre Agassi.

James Blake struggled a bit with his serving, but battled through to defeat Jean-Rene Lisnard of France 6-4, 6-3.

Alexander Popp of Germany defeated Bjorn Phau of Germany 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3; Paul Goldstein eliminated Alejandro Falla of Colombia 6-3, 6-2; Wesley Moodie of South Africa beat Robert Smeets of Australia 6-4, 7-6(4); Wayne Arthurs of Australia defeated Phillip Simmonds 0-6, 6-3, 6-1

Golovin crashes out

Anna Chakvetadze scored one of two upsets on Monday in the Acura Classic, ousting 12th-seeded Tatiana Golovin.

Chakvetadze, one of 11 Russians in a field of 64, defeated the Frenchwoman 6-4, 6-4 on the opening day of the event. Sesil Karatantcheva of Bulgaria pulled off the other upset with a 6-1, 0-6, 7-5 victory over No. 13 Shinobu Asagoe of Japan.
