Letters to the Editor
While calamity was staring Mumbaikars in the face, the Congress was busy enticing and embracing the Shiv Sena deserters. While on the one hand we had people protesting on the roads against lack of water, electricity, and food and complaining that none of the elected representatives was to be seen, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra was embracing Narayan Rane, beaming with pride at his conquest. The aam aadmi and the janta? Gaye bhaad me (Gone with the floods)!
An Opposition leader becoming a Minister almost overnight by defection has been unheard of even in our country. This shows the deplorable depths to which politics has plumbed. One can only extend sympathy to the people of Maharashtra for experiencing the adage `trouble often comes in pairs.' Mr. Rane should be thanked for ably demonstrating what a farce our democracy is.
T.S. Pattabhi Raman,
Sunil Dutt, an ardent secularist who was in the forefront of fighting Hindu communalism, died a dejected man after the Congress leadership succumbed to political expediency and admitted Sanjay Nirupam into the party. Mr. Rane's induction is crass political opportunism.
Krishnamurthy Raman,
