Dress code

First, it was Mumbai and now it is Chennai where the idea of a dress code for college students is gaining acceptance. The move is welcome. While clothes are a matter of personal preference, in colleges where students function as part of a big group it is only proper that they observe certain canons. In fact, dress code should be extended to the workplace too.

In places of learning, it is important to maintain decency and decorum. A dress code is an absolute necessity.

It is ridiculous to see the move as an infringement on personal liberty. All that the dress code seeks to do is make students adhere to certain norms in the interests of all-round discipline.
