PONDICHERRY: The Health Minister, E. Valsaraj, has said that the Union Health Ministry had adjudged Pondicherry as being ahead of other States in rendering healthcare services in the country as a whole. Launching a Rs 1crore scheme to immunise children and adolescent girls against the occurrence of `Mumps, Measles and Rubella` (MMR) at a Primary Health Centre in Lawspet near here on Tuesday, he said that the MMR project was launched for the first time in the country as a whole only in Pondicherry now. This would cover children in the age group of 18 to 24 months. The morbidity and mortality due to these three diseases if not prevented would be more and hence the preventive step of immunisation of the children and also female children had been taken up expeditiously here. Mr.Valsaraj said that the Government general hospital had been equipped with most modern facilities and as part of the wider and hi-tech medical care programmes the department had also brought out a plan to link Pondicherry hospitals through tele-medicine and tele-conferencing system. Health cards would be issued to all the people of Pondicherry in a phased manner. A renal transplant block would be opened soon in the government hospital. The Health department was also providing financial assistance to enable poor patients to take treatment in corporate and leading hospitals for certain ailments.
