Tintin on his way to India

POPULAR CHARACTER: Tintin and his pet Snowy.

For well over six decades now this Belgian reporter has taken adventure lovers around the world on a trail that has seldom failed to deliver the right mix of action, suspense and drama.

His adorable and trustworthy fox terrier always in tow, he globe-trotted in his trademark baggie pants that never touched the ankles, just like his blonde quiff that never went out of place or fashion for him. A boy reporter who helped good men along the way and ended up as headlines at the end of every stint, Tintin is finally coming to India - and this time speaking the language of the land.

Having enthralled comic and book lovers for decades, Herge's popular comic strip character will be launched this week as part of a new VCD series, "Adventures of Tintin'', in Hindi, Bengali, Tamil and Malayalam.

To be distributed by the leading Mumbai-based independent foreign film and TV distribution

company Star Entertainment, the "Adventures of Tintin'' will feature 14 of his adventures. Having appeared in over 120 million books published in 45 languages around 50 countries, Star Entertainment will hold the exclusive television satellite, cable and video distribution rights of the Tintin series. Currently aired on Zee English and Zee Bangla, Tintin happens to be the first French programme that has been dubbed in English, Hindi, Bengali, Malyalam and Tamil, and is also being aired across regional television channels in India. "We want to create our own niche in the animation entertainment. Star Entertainment aims at giving the best to its viewers. Carefully sourced from different parts of the world, we have brought animation series like `Tintin' and `Marsupilami' from France, `Defenders of the Earth', and `Sons Beetle Bailey' from the U.S. '', points out Jiten Hemdev, of Star Entertainment. -- Lakshmi B.Ghosh
