CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has ordered notice to the Government on a writ petition highlighting certain procedural anomalies in calculating marks scored by sportspersons for admission to medical courses, and also the abolition of sportspersons quota for BDS course this year. Admitting the petition filed by the Tamil Nadu State Kho-Kho Association, the First Bench comprising the Chief Justice Markandey Katju and Justice F.M. Ibrahim Kalifulla ordered notices to the Education Secretary, Anna University and the selection committees for engineering and medical admissions. The petitioner contended that till last year, certain percentage of seats were reserved for MBBS, BDS and engineering courses under the Eminent Sportspersons Quota. Usually, 42 engineering seats, three MBBS seats and four BDS seats are reserved under the quota. This year, it has been limited to three per cent of total seats for MBBS seats. And, without any reason or notice, the quota for BDS has been withdrawn. Another major anomaly was that while those participating in sporting events at the district level were awarded 40 marks, those participating in national and international events were entitled to 25 marks. The petitioner prayed for an injunction forbearing the authorities from filling MBBS and BDS seats without earmarking three per cent of the total seats for eminent sportspersons.
