NEW DELHI: Alarmed over the high rate of surrender of its landline phones in recent months and years, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) has decided to deploy its dedicated marketing team to convince people not to dump fixed-line phones. "We have decided to change our strategy. The plan is to form a dedicated team of marketing officers who will deal with cases related to surrender of phones. They will personally approach subscribers and talk to them regarding their problems. We will highlight technical advancements we have made in our system and network. Ours is the cheapest telecom service and people should benefit from it," says the new MTNL (Delhi) Executive Director, A. K. Arora, who joined office this past weekend. He succeeds A. K. Girotra, who has retired. Mr. Arora, who was so far Chief General Manager of Bihar circle, said his main goal would be to put brakes on the falling number of landline subscribers and expand mobile services to give private operators run for their money. At present, MTNL in Delhi has 16.54-lakh landline subscribers, 5.25-lakh mobile subscribers, 1.25-lakh WLL subscribers and over 26,000 broadband service subscribers. Describing Delhi as one of the fastest growing mobile markets, Mr. Arora said they were expanding their subscriber base as well as the network in the Capital. "We already have 297 base terminal stations and another 69 will be added by the end of this month. We also have plans to introduce new mobile connections soon besides new value-added services for our subscribers," he added. The new Executive Director said the company had been introducing all new technologies being offered in telecom market worldwide covering both fixed-line and wireless services. "For instance, we have been constantly upgrading all our exchanges and cable network. Another important development is making all landline connections' last mile wireless that reduced several problems related to connectivity and quality."
