CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Minister for School Education, Harnam Das Johar, has announced that the grant scheme for Government-aided private schools will not be scrapped at any cost and there is no proposal to phase out the 95 per cent aid to these educational institutions in the State. Through an official release, the Minister, while describing news reports and statements by some political leaders in this regard as baseless, erroneous and motivated, assured that the existing grant-in-aid would not be reduced either. Mr. Johar reminded the teaching faculty as well as management bodies of educational institutions that following "anti-employee'' policies, the previous Akali-BJP regime had reduced this aid to 50 per cent and it was only after the concerted efforts of the present Government led by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh that the original amount of the grant was restored. The Minister Johar advised teachers as well as school managements against playing into the hands of the opposition and their politically- motivated propaganda. He also suggested that if the opponents were keen on playing as protagonists of education as well as the students' rights, they must verify the facts from the concerned authorities before resorting to any protest. The Education Minister assured the teaching community that the State government was fully committed to providing quality education to students and already initiated a prestigious project to enable the students to compete at the national level in the computerisation era.
