Policeman injured in scuffle with an accused

BANGALORE: A policeman was injured when an accused attacked him in Sampangiramangar police station limits on Monday evening. According to police, a four-member team went to arrest Shivakumar, alias Kucha Kannu, who was involved in a case of theft.

When Shivakumar learnt that the police had surrounded the house, he, his wife and mother-in-law tried to escape from the rear door. Police constable Ramachandrappa caught Shivakumar's wife and mother-in-law. Shivakumar hit the policeman on his head, twist his arm and got the two women released. All the three then escaped.

The injured policeman has been admitted to a private hospital. The Sampangiramanagar police have registered a case.

Arrested

The N.T. Pet police have arrested one of the two Thrissur-based persons on charges of throttling a 32-year-old film technician in a lodge in New Tharagupet on July 6.

According to police, the accused M.T. Firoz (23) and another person brought Anil Kumar, a Kochi-based film photographer, to the lodge. There they entered in the lodge's register that they were natives of Kasaragod. On the night of July 6, they strangulated Anil Kumar and went away by locking the room from outside. The police are searching for Firoz's accomplice.

The J.P. Nagar police arrested two persons on charges of stealing two-wheelers. The police said the two accused, Mohammed Afroz (23) and Syed Imran, from Vinayaknagar, were involved in several cases of stealing vehicles.

The police have recovered three two-wheelers from them.

Sentenced

The Second City Traffic Magistrate Court has sentenced Manjunath to undergo six months of imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs. 3,500 on finding him guilty of causing death of a person because of rash and negligent driving.

Manjunath, driving a motorcycle, had hit Satyashree, who was riding a scooter on Girinagar Main Road in June 2002. Satyashree died in the hospital the same day.
