BANGALORE: Madras Engineering Group (MEG) entered the second phase of the D.S. Murthy & V. Karunakaran Memorial hockey tournament, beating Canara Bank 1-0 here on Wednesday. Biskhal Bhengra scored MEG's winner.

In the second match of the day, Pioneer Corps Training Centre (PCTC) defeated Army Services Corps 2-1. The winning goal came in the second-half of the extra time after both the teams were level at 1-1 during regulation timeSairaj Singh put PCTC ahead in the second minute, while S.V Sunil restored parity for ASC in the 33rd minute. Saran Lakra slotted the match winner in the eighth minute of extra time.

The second phase commences on August 5. The four qualifiers — MEG, PCTC, SAI `A' and HAL — will join Indian Overseas Bank, Indian Bank, Southern Railway (Chennai) and Southern Command in the league-cum-knock-out phase. — Special Correspondent
