Thiagarajar College of Engineering defends title

MADURAI: Host Thiagarajar College of Engineering retained the title for the third successive year in the Anna University Zone IX inter-collegiate hockey tournament defeating PSNA College of Engineering, Dindigul 4-1 in the final here on Wednesday.

Ramesh Kumar scored three goals and G. Vinodh scored one for TCE. D. Parthiban scored the only goal for PSNA College.

In the third place match, Sethu Institute of Technology, Kariapatti beat Alagappa College of Engineering, Karaikudi 4-1. Mahendran scored three and Aathesh scored one for SIT. Varun Pradeep scored for ACCET.

Earlier in the semifinals, TCE beat ACCET, Karaikudi 4-0 and PSNA beat SIT 6-5 via tie-breaker.

AKCE wins title

Arulmigu Kalasalingam College of Engineering (AKCE), Krishnankovil won the women's ball badminton title in the Anna University Zone X inter-collegiate tournament at Cheran Mahadevi in Ambasamudram here on Tuesday.

The results: Final: AKCE bt National Engg College, Kovilpatti 29-18, 24-29, 29-17.

Semifinals: AKCE bt SCAD College, Cheran Mahadevi 29-10, 29-12; National Engg College bt Mepco Schlenk Engg College, Sivakasi 29-26, 29-23.

Thalaimuthu sizzles

Thalaimuthu's five for six helped host Saraswathy Narayanan (SN) College defeat Ayya Nadar Janaki Ammal (ANJA) College, Sivakasi by eight wickets and enter the semifinals of the Madurai Kamaraj University `A' zone inter-collegiate cricket tournament here on Wednesday.

The scores: (quarterfinals): ANJA College 83 in 20 overs (Thalaimuthu five for six) lost to SN College 84 for two in 16.1 overs (Rajiah 43).

American College 68 in 14.1 overs lost to Sri SRNM College, Sattur 72 for six in 14 overs.

Yadava College 82 in 16.3 overs lost to MKU College, Madurai 83 for one in 15 overs.

MAVMM AV College 106 for nine in 20 overs (Nagaraj four for 22) lost to Thiagarajar Arts College 107 for five in 17.5 overs.

Subbiah Vidyalayam triumphs

Subbiah Vidyalayam Higher Secondary School won both the super senior and senior titles and bagged the Sundarambal Memorial Trophies, while Caldwell Higher Secondary School won the super senior title and St. Lassale Higher Secondary School won the senior title in boys' section of the Tuticorin district inter-school volleyball tournament conducted jointly by TDVA and Gymkhana Club here on Wednesday.

The results (finals): Boys: Super Senior: Caldwell HSS bt St. Lassale HSS 25-18, 25-23. Senior: St. Lassale HSS bt Caldwell HSS 21-25, 25-18, 25-20.

Girls: Super senior: Three team league: Subbiah Vidyalam HSS bt Holy Cross Anglo Indian HSS 25-23, 26-24; Holy Cross HSS 18-25, 25-19, 25-17. Holy Cross Anglo Indian HSS bt Holy Cross HSS 25-13, 25-21.

Senior: Subbiah Vidyalayam HSS bt Kammavar Girls HSS, Kovilpatti 25-20, 25-18.

Chatrapatti GHSS wins overall championship

Government Higher Secondary School, Chatrapatti, won the overall championship and host SDH Jain Vidyalaya finished second in the district-level inter-school swimming meet for boys and girls held here recently. About 400 boys and girls from 36 schools participated.

The results (winners): Boys (11th and 12th std.): 50m freestyle: N. Balakrishnan (Thiagarajar Model School); 100m freestyle: Rajaram (GHSS, Sholavandan); 200m freestyle: V. Anandaraj (GHSS, Alanganallur); 50m backstroke: V. Anandaraj; 50m breaststroke: R.R. Karthik (GHSS, Chatrapatti); 50m butterfly: V. Anandraj (GHSS, Alanganallur).

Selection trials
