Bail rejected in murder case

BHADRAVATI: The JMFC Second Additional Judge, Yashwanth Kumar, has rejected the bail pleas of all 12 accused in the murder of Soude Putta here on July 3. The arrested persons, Handi Ramesh, Emme Jaya, Bhatta Manja, Myna Manja, Vinoda, Kindel Kumara, Venkatesha, Santosha alias Lala, Harisha, Kodihally Satya, and two others, Sundar and S. Kumar, a former Zilla Panchayat member, who were arrested on the charge of instigation, have filed the bail applications. After hearing both the assistant public prosecutor and the lawyers of the accused persons, the judge declined to grant bail for any of the accused. — Correspondent

Rs. 1 crore for channel repair

BHADRAVATI: The Government has sanctioned Rs. 1 crore for repairs of the Gondi Channel of the Bhadra Right Bank Canal.

For the modernisation of the Bhadra Right Bank Canal, Rs. 10 crores has been allocated of which Rs. 1 crore has been set apart for the Gondi Channel. This was disclosed to presspersons here by the Holehonnur MLA, Basavanyappa. He also said that the Bhadra Command Area needs Rs. 500 crores for development. The Government has sought the help of a private company in Japan for this, he added. — Correspondent

Drowned

BHADRAVATI: Pranesha (45), who had gone to Kudli near here where the Tunga and the Bhadra join, drowned in the river there on Sunday. Eyewitnesses said that after bathing his son before performing the Chaturmasya puja, he went to bathe in the river and was drowned.

The Holehonnur Police have registered a case. A search is on for the body. — Correspondent

Sandalwood seized

CHITRADURGA: The Hiriyur police arrested three persons in connection with the alleged smuggling of sandalwood and seized the wood from them on Monday evening. The police seized 17 kg of sandalwood worth Rs. 2,700 from them. — Staff Correspondent

ITI counselling

Hubli: The counselling sessions for getting admission to the Government Industrial Training Institutes at Hubli, Dharwad, and Kalghatgi will be held from August 9 to 12 at the Government Industrial Institute, Hosur, Hubli, which is the nodal centre for admission. CHITRADURGA: The Hiriyur police arrested three persons in connection with the alleged smuggling of sandalwood and seized the wood from them on Monday evening. The arrested have been identified as Rajanaik (30), Babusab (38) and Shafiulla (22) of Javanagondanahalli in Hiriyur taluk.

The police seized 17 kg of sandalwood worth Rs. 2,700 from them. The arrested have been remanded in judicial custody.

Six arrested

Chitradurga: The Chitradurga police arrested six persons in connection with an illicit liquor racket in Beerenahalli in Hiriyur taluk where four people died allegedly after consuming illicit liquor a week ago.

The arrested have been identified as Rudramuni of Beerenahalli, Umesh of Hiriyur, Mallikarjuna of Challakere, Vijay Kumar of Hassan, and Balakrishna and Manjunath of Hiriyur. The accused have been remanded in judicial custody.

Woman commits suicide

RAICHUR: Hemabai, 55, wife of Jemillappa, reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a tree at a field near Gorebal Tanda in Lingsugur taluk on Sunday. The Lingsugur police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Both Houses adjourned sine die Bangalore: Both the Houses of the State Legislature were adjourned sine die on Wednesday evening. They were originally scheduled to sit till August 5. The developments in the Janata Dal (Secular) have obviously led to the curtailment of the session. — Special Correspondent

Programme to create awareness on rain

Bangalore: The Arkavathy-Kumudvathy River Rejuvenation Coordination Committee is organising "Mungaru Male Habba," a festival to create awareness on rain and nature at Ravindra Kalakshetra here on August 20. One-minute stop for train

HUBLI: South Western Railway has decided to allow a one-minute stop at Shedbal station situated in the Londa-Miraj section of the Hubli division for the Bangalore-Kolhapur-Bangalore Rani Channamma Express (nos. 6589/ 6590) till August 12, according to a release.

The stop has been allowed temporarily as the road traffic in the area has been paralysed due to heavy rains, the release said.

The Rani Channamma Express (6589) will arrive at Shedbal station at 11.19 a.m. and leave at 11.20 a.m. In the return direction, the train's (no. 6590) arrival and departure will be at 4.03 p.m. and 4.04 p.m. respectively.

Award for journalist

Belgaum: Former editor of Samyukta Karnataka Surendra Dani has been selected for the R.H. Kulkarni Memorial Award, instituted by the R.H. Kulkarni Memorial Trust, Belgaum. The award, which carries a cash prize of Rs. 5000, a citation and a memento, will be presented to him at a function on Friday. — Staff Correspondent

Forest official `trapped'

BANGALORE: The Bijapur Lokayukta police on Tuesday caught a forest official while he was allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 50,000 from a junior official.

According to an official press release, the accused, M.R. Adisheshan, Assistant Conservator of Forests, Bijapur, demanded the sum from R.N. Kadasiddeshwaramath, working as Range Forest Officer, Social Forestry section in Indi taluk. The amount was demanded for passing an order giving Mr. Kadasiddeshwaramath the complete charge of Indi taluk office. — Staff Reporter

Proceedings adjourned

BANGALORE: The general court martial proceedings against Indian Air Force Flying Officer, Anjali Gupta, held on Wednesday was adjourned till Thursday following Ms. Gupta's advocate reporting sick. Ms. Gupta is being tried on charges of insubordination and irregularity. At the start of Wednesday's proceedings, Ms. Gupta reported to the court martial jury that her advocate, Mohan Kumar, could not appear in court as he was yet to recover from fever. — Staff Reporter
