THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here on Wednesday that the criticism about diversion of funds received for tsunami relief was unfounded. The Chief Minister told presspersons that the amount received into the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund between December 26, 2004 and July 25, 2005 was Rs.40.02 crores. During the same period, Rs.27.95 crores was sanctioned for tsunami relief. A sum of Rs.8.31 crores was spent for providing other relief assistance. This was what was being described as a diversion. However, this amount was normal expenditure from the Fund for the period. Between August 31 and December 26, Rs. 5.70 crores had been spent from the Fund for various relief measures. Earlier, he inaugurated funds collection for the National Institute of Speech and Hearing by contributing Rs.1,000.
