NEW DELHI: For the fourth consecutive day on Wednesday a massive shortfall of power plagued the Northern Grid, affecting supply to Delhi in a big way. While the shortfall at the Grid was around 5,000 MW due to problem in various generating units, Delhi Transco Limited struggled to meet the increase in demand from its consumers. As demand for power in Delhi touched over 3,600 MW, Transco supply fell short by over 500 MW. The peak demand Transco was able to meet was 3,355 MW, while 328 MW load-shedding was done during the day, though it got 100 MW additional power from Andhra Pradesh and 50 MW from Gujarat. Transco also failed to overdraw from the Grid as its hands are tied by an advisory from the North Region Load Despatch Centre (NRLDC) asking all nine northern States drawing power from the Grid to maintain "discipline" and follow "stability parameters" for its safety. Moreover, fluctuation in frequency in the Grid is also causing a problem as it was affecting supply from the Grid. According to a Transco official, the Grid has been facing a shortfall of around 5,000 MW as generating units of the 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri hydroelectric plant besides that of Singrauli, Rihand, Unchahar, Oria and Aunta plants have been affected. This has led to a shortfall in allocation to the Capital. The crisis would continue till the Grid starts getting proper supply, he added.
