THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: State Women's Commission chairperson M. Kamalam on Wednesday visited the parents of two-year-old Sharanya who was raped and murdered near Thekke Kollencode Fishermen colony in Pozhiyoor police station limits on Monday night. The chairperson spoke to the local people and neighbours of the bereaved family. She has sought a report from the police on the matter. The commission will give a report to the Government at the earliest. The commission has also ordered the police to take stringent legal action against the accused person and take adequate steps to prevent such heinous crimes in the future. Sebastian alias Cheviathan, 24, was produced before the court on the double charge of rape and murder and remanded to 14 days in police custody. He was subjected to forensic medical examination prior to being produced before the court, an official said. The All India Democratic Women's Association has called for stringent action against the accused arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a child in Pozhiyoor on Tuesday. At a press conference in the city, State Secretary of the association P.K. Srimathi, who visited the house of the victim, said that Sharanya was only 10 days away from celebrating her second birthday. The child's body was found floating in a pond nearby following a search conducted by her parents and neighbours. Ms. Srimathi said the incident should serve as an eye-opener to the legal justice system.
