Accused attempts suicide in custody

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Jayan, 30, resident of Neyyattinkara, who was arrested on the charge of violating the Arms Act, attempted suicide at the Cantonment police station late on Wednesday night.

Circle Inspector, Cantonment, Madhu said Jayan was arrested in front of the Mannam Memorial National Club on Wednesday evening. The youth attempted to strangle himself to death with a piece of cloth in the police lock-up, he said.

The policemen foiled the attempt and rushed the youth to Medical College Hospital. He is currently under police guard and has been booked under section 309 of the Indian Penal Code.

Man missing

Dileep, 30, hailing from Palkulangara, was reported missing since July 31 by his wife. The Vanchiyoor police have registered a case on the basis of the statement given by his wife, Saritha. The police said that Raju was working as a collection agent for the ICICI bank. There was no report of any domestic discord between the couple.

Undertrial dead

A 30-year-old undertrial prisoner, Jayan, who was admitted to Mental Hospital last week, was reported dead by hospital authorities on August 1. The deceased belonged to Pangappara. The Peroorkada police have registered a case of unnatural death on the basis of the report given by the hospital authorities.

The Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) conducted an inquest on the body. Later, a post mortem examination was conducted at Medical College Hospital mortuary. The examination procedure has been video recorded, police said. The body of the youth is being kept at the mortuary.

Cheating case registered

The Medical College police have registered a case of cheating against a couple hailing from Sreekaryam on the basis of a statement given by a 26-year-old woman hailing from Kattakada.

The complainant, Binu, has stated that she was illegally detained by the couple at a house in Chandigarh and made to work as a housemaid.

She said that the couple had taken her to Chandigarh promising her employment in an ayurveda massage centre.

The police said a case of cheating and illegal detention has been registered against Haridas and his wife, Ruby, on the basis of the statement given by the woman. An official said the police were yet to take the statement of the accused persons.

Wash destroyed

In an early morning raid on Wednesday, Excise personnel seized a country-boat that was being used to distil hooch on the Vellayani lake. Sivaprasad, 28, had been arrested in this connection, Excise Inspector Chandrababu said.

The boat was found anchored off the bank of the lake at Kulangara. A cooking gas cylinder and a quantity of `wash' were seized from the boat. Another person, identified as Sunil, managed to escape. The boat was earlier being used for sand-mining, the official said.

Man killed

An unidentified pedestrian was killed after being hit by a tipper lorry at Panjappura junction, near the entrance to the underpass at Palayam, late night on Wednesday.

Sources at Medical College Hospital (MCH) said that the man, approximately 55 years of age, was brought dead to the casualty wing in the police ambulance. The body has been kept in the mortuary.

Dead

A 52-year-old woman, who is said to be mentally ill, was found dead inside a well in her neighbourhood on Wednesday. Sources at MCH identified her as Suseela, resident of Panimoola, Pothencode. The body has been kept in the mortuary.
