GUWAHATI: A State-level convention organised by the State unit of the CPI (M) here on Thursday resolved to build a united movement to mount pressure on the Government to fulfil long-pending demands of the tea garden workers and the tea tribe community. The convention adopted an 11-point charter that called for inclusion of the tea tribes in the list of Scheduled Tribes, increasing the minimum daily wages of tea garden workers to Rs. 66, provincialisation of schools in garden areas, bringing the schools under the purview of the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan mission, distribution of surplus land of the gardens to landless garden workers. A call for State-wide movement in October in support of this charter of demands was also issued from the platform of the convention which was attended by tea garden workers from districts. A resolution moved by CPI (M) secretary Uddhab Barman stated that tea tribe community remained the most neglected being deprived of just wages, basic education and health care facilities under the Congress rule. On the other hand, both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress parties were indulging in divisive politics on ethnic lines among the garden workers for narrow political gain.
