dated August 5, 1955: UK rejects Singapore plea

Mr. Alan Lennox-Boyd, Secretary of State for the Colonies, has rejected the Singapore Legislative Assembly's demand for immediate self-rule. According to sources in Singapore, Mr. Lennox-Boyd, who arrived in Singapore during the course of his Far-Eastern tour, has been "sympathetic" to the request of the colony's Chief Minister, Mr. David Marshall, for more control over Singapore's affairs. But he has supported the stand of the Governor, Sir Robert Black, on constitutional affairs.
