NEW DELHI: Harsh Mankad and Mustafa Ghouse beat Jan-Michael Gambill of the US and Chris Guccione of Australia 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of doubles in the $100,000 Challenger tennis tournament in Vancouver. In the first leg of the Chinese Satellite in Tianjin, Ashutosh Singh did well to make it to the singles quarterfinals and the doubles semifinals. Ashutosh beat the third-seeded Hao Lu of China 6-3, 6-4 to set up a quarterfinal clash with the sixth-seeded Adam Thompson of New Zealand. In doubles, the top-seeded Jaco Mathew and Ashutosh Singh beat Lior Barbash and Ishay Hadash of Israel 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. The other Indian pair of Kamala Kannan and Divij Sharan lost the quarterfinals 2-6, 3-6 to the second-seeded Xin-Yuan Yu and Yu Zhang of China. In the $10,000 ITF women's tournament in Wrexham, Britain, Sanaa Bhambri reached the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over qualifier Anastasia Revzina of Russia. However, the top-seeded Rushmi Chakravarthi lost 5-7, 5-7 to qualifier Laura Peterzan of Britain and the seventh-seeded Ankita Bhambri lost 1-6, 3-6 to the wild card entrant Anna Smith of Britain in the first round. In doubles, Rushmi in partnership with Paula Marama of New Zealand beat Catherine Fall and Samantha Murray of Britain 6-3, 6-4 in the pre-quarterfinals.
